Must-See Caves in Kusadasi

Zeus Cave

Zeus Cave, located within the present-day boundaries of Güzelçamlı, was the meeting centre (Panionion) of the Ionian League, an ancient federation of 12 city-states.

Situated within a significant ancient site, Zeus Cave takes its name from the mythological Sky God Zeus. According to mythology, it is said that the goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, swam into Zeus Cave to enhance her beauty. Another legend tells the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who visited the cave and bathed in its waters during her journey from the island of Samos to Ephesus. Consequently, it is believed that the water of Zeus Cave has a beautifying effect on the skin of women.

The Sky God Zeus sought refuge in this cave, resting and bathing within it to calm himself after escaping from the wrath of his brother Poseidon.
