A country’s culinary landscape is incomplete without its beverages, and in Turkey, drinks play an integral role in social gatherings and meals. Whether you find yourself in the lively seaside town of Kusadasi or elsewhere in Turkey, make sure you immerse yourself in the country’s diverse drink culture.

Let’s take a sip of Turkey’s most beloved beverages!

Turkish Tea (Cay)

Turkish tea, or Cay (pronounced ‘chai’), is a national obsession, served in small, tulip-shaped glasses. Made from loose black tea leaves, it’s traditionally prepared in a ‘caydanlik’ (a two-tiered tea kettle) and enjoyed without milk. It’s a staple in Turkish homes, cafes, and business meetings alike.

Turkish Coffee (Turk Kahvesi)

Turkish coffee is famous worldwide for its strong, rich flavour and unique method of preparation. Unfiltered, and finely ground coffee beans are boiled in a special pot, called a ‘cezve.’ Savour it slowly, and don’t forget to leave the thick layer of ground at the bottom of the cup!

Ayran

This refreshing yoghurt-based drink is a classic Turkish thirst quencher, especially during the hot summer months in Kusadasi. Ayran, made by blending yoghurt, water, and a pinch of salt, is an excellent accompaniment to savoury dishes.

Rakı

Considered Turkey’s national alcoholic beverage, Rakı is a strong, anise-flavoured spirit. Often served with meze (small plates of food), Rakı is typically diluted with water, which turns it a milky white, earning it the nickname ‘lion’s milk.’ It’s truly a drink for the adventurous!

Salgam Suyu

Salgam suyu is a popular pickled vegetable juice made from purple carrots, turnips, and fermented wheat. This tangy, slightly spicy beverage is commonly enjoyed with Rakı or kebabs.

Boza

Boza is a thick, slightly sour, and sweet beverage made from fermented grains, typically enjoyed in the colder months. This age-old drink is rich in history and is often garnished with a sprinkling of cinnamon and a handful of roasted chickpeas.

Salep

Warm, creamy, and comforting, Salep is a winter drink made from the ground tubers of a specific orchid species. Blended with milk, sugar, and a dash of cinnamon, it’s a must-try for those visiting Turkey during cooler seasons.
