Temple of Apollo: The Temple of Apollo in Didyma is the most iconic historical site in the region. This ancient Greek sanctuary was one of the most significant oracles in the ancient world, rivalled only by the Oracle of Delphi. The temple was dedicated to the god Apollo, and it is believed that the prophecies delivered here were both revered and feared. The most striking feature of the temple is its immense size and the impressive Corinthian columns that still stand today, even in their partially ruined state. The temple’s construction began in the 8th century BC, but it was continuously expanded and renovated over several centuries. Although the temple was never fully completed, its grandeur and mystical atmosphere continue to captivate visitors.

Miletus: Located near Didim, the ancient city of Miletus is another must-visit historical site. Miletus was one of the most significant and prosperous cities in the ancient Greek world. Its strategic location on the coast contributed to its maritime and economic importance. The city was known for its philosophical and scientific contributions, as well as its impressive architecture. The Miletus Theater, built during the Hellenistic period and later expanded by the Romans, is one of the most well-preserved ancient theatres in Turkey, with a seating capacity of up to 15,000 spectators. Other notable structures in Miletus include the Roman baths, the Delphinium, and the Faustina Baths.

Priene: Situated not far from Didim, Priene is an ancient Greek city that showcases remarkable examples of classical architecture. The city was carefully planned and designed, following the principles of Hippodamus, the father of urban planning. Priene’s well-preserved ruins include the Temple of Athena, the Bouleuterion (Council Chamber), the Prytaneion (Town Hall), and the Theatre, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s well-organized layout and architectural achievements.

Didymaion (Sanctuary of Artemis and Apollo): Close to the Temple of Apollo, the Didymaion was a grand sanctuary that served as the religious and spiritual centre of Didyma. It featured various structures and altars dedicated to both Artemis and Apollo. The entrance to the sanctuary was marked by impressive columns, and the cult statues of Artemis and Apollo were revered by ancient visitors. Today, the site offers a glimpse into the religious practices and rituals of the ancient Greeks.
